Black CIA Whistlevblower: "The Invisible Man"

This conviction coupled with the testimony from the Attorney General nominee makes my blood run cold.

The Invisible Man: Jeffrey Sterling, CIA Whistleblower

Posted: Updated:

JEFFREY STERLING

The mass media have suddenly discovered Jeffrey Sterling -- after his conviction Monday afternoon as a CIA whistleblower.
Sterling's indictment four years ago received fleeting news coverage that recited the government's charges. From the outset, the Justice Department portrayed him as bitter and vengeful -- with the classic trash-the-whistleblower word "disgruntled" thrown in -- all of which the mainline media dutifully recounted without any other perspective.
Year after year, Sterling's case dragged through appellate courts, tangled up with the honorable refusal of journalist James Risen to in any way identify sources for his 2006 book State of War. While news stories or pundits occasionally turned their lens on Risen, they scarcely mentioned Sterling, whose life had been turned upside down -- by his firing from the CIA early in the Bush administration after filing a racial discrimination lawsuit, and much later by the 10-count indictment that included seven counts under the Espionage Act.
Sterling was one of the very few African-American case officers in the CIA. He became a whistleblower by virtue of going through channels to the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2003 to inform staffers about the CIA's ill-conceived, poorly executed and dangerous Operation Merlin, which had given a flawed design for a nuclear weapons component to Iran back in 2000.
Long story short, by the start of 2011, Sterling was up against the legal wall. While press-freedom groups and some others gradually rallied around Risen's right to source confidentiality, Sterling remained the invisible man.
Like almost everyone, for a long time I knew close to nothing about Sterling or his legal battle. But as I began to realize how much was at stake in the government's ongoing threat to jail Risen for refusing to betray any source, Sterling started to come into my peripheral vision.
Last spring I worked with colleagues at RootsAction.org to launch a petition drive titled "We Support James Risen Because We Support a Free Press." As petitions go, it was a big success, for reasons well beyond the fact that it gained more than 100,000 signers with plenty of help from other initiating groups (The Nation, FAIR, the Freedom of the Press Foundation, The Progressive and Center for Media and Democracy).
The Justice Department, which had been aggressively pursuing Risen for a half-dozen years at that point, was set back on its heels by the major favorable publicity that came out of our mid-August presentation of the Risen petition in tandem with a news conference at the National Press Club.
Quick media ripple effects included a strong column by Maureen Dowd in support of fellow New York Times journalist Risen (though she didn't mention the petition or the news conference, which she attended). In the fall I teamed up with a colleague at ExposeFacts.org, the incisive investigative journalist Marcy Wheeler, to write what turned out to be a cover story in The Nation, "The Government War Against Reporter James Risen," providing the first in-depth account of the intertwined cases of Risen and Sterling.
But throughout the fall, for the mass media as well as all but a few progressive media outlets, Jeffrey Sterling remained the invisible man.
The principle of supporting whistleblowers as strongly as journalists is crucial. Yet support for the principle is hit-and-miss among individuals and organizations that should be clear and forthright. This need is especially great when the government is invoking "national security" claims.
As the whistleblower advocate Jesselyn Radack of the Government Accountability Project has said:
When journalists become targets, they have a community and a lobby of powerful advocates to go to for support. Whistleblowers are in the wilderness. ... They're indicted under the most serious charge you can level against an American: being an enemy of the state.
We encountered this terrain when the same initiating groups launched a new petition -- this one in support of Jeffrey Sterling -- "Blowing the Whistle on Government Recklessness Is a Public Service, Not a Crime."
Some groups that had been wonderfully supportive of the Risen petition -- notably the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and the Committee to Protect Journalists -- opted not to have anything to do with the Sterling petition. In sharp contrast, quick endorsement of the Sterling petition came from Reporters Without Borders and the Government Accountability Project.
Two weeks ago Jeffrey Sterling went to trial at last. He was at the defense table during seven days of proceedings that included very dubious testimony from 23 present and former CIA employees as well as the likes of Condoleezza Rice.
When a court clerk read out the terrible verdict Monday afternoon, Sterling continued to stand with the dignity that he had maintained throughout the trial.
At age 47, Jeffrey Sterling is facing a very long prison sentence. As a whistleblower, he has done a lot for us. He should be invisible no more.

Subject: Re: Tahoe Hotshots, Alcohol, Death

When the Hotshots were driving back from an "end of season party."Were there  incidents of alcohol, drugs, assault, sexual assault, driving under the influence and other incidents from these parties that are condoned and even encouraged by FS management starting with the managers and instructors at Wildland Apprentice Academy at McClellan? Will  managers be held accountable for these improper and unprofessional behaviors and attitudes  or will these incidents  continue?

Some of the same unprofessional behaviors and attitudes are thrown down to
all branches of the USDA including the way that Customer Farmer's are Targeted and have been targeted even before they become customer/farmers, they are trapped into bogus loans to steal property that has been in American Farm Families for generations, the Bonus for foreclosure at the USDA has led to fraud waste and abuse and much wasted tax payer dollars, non compliance in the unlawful and unethical treatment  of the American Farmers and USDA Employees in the unprofessional manner that USDA Management, civil rights office , OIG, and a whole host of collaborative agency players have unlawfully, fraudulently gainfully benefited
by these horrendous practices they have collutioned  against anyone who wasnt partaking in the Legacy practices of coveting or stealing what thy neighbor(s) have.

In loo of the above an automatic investigation into all previous allegations should be
started as soon as possible so that the accountability and transparency.

How many people have to die before the agency gets serious about changing the culture of drugs, alcohol, sex, and violence as acceptable firefighter behaviors?

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CAMPTONVILLE, California — A forest firefighter lying in a road was run over and killed by a colleague in a sparely populated stretch of Northern California in a bizarre early morning traffic incident involving alcohol, authorities said Monday.
California Highway Patrol investigators said a driver in Yuba County early Saturday spotted a man, Michael Patrick Kelly, 32, lying in the road about 3 miles from Camptonville, California, which is about 80 miles north of Sacramento.
The unidentified driver flashed his high beams in a failed attempt to warn an approaching vehicle that it was on a collision course with the man in the road.
The small car with six passengers, driven by Andrew Gruenberg, 26, struck Kelly, who was pronounced dead at the scene with head and torso injuries, the CHP said.
After hitting Kelly, Gruenberg traveled another 2 miles to his destination, telling investigators later that he believed he ran over an animal. A passenger called 911 and reported the collision and a "hazard in the roadway."
After arriving at his destination, two of Kelly's passengers got into another car and drove back to the accident site, where they encountered emergency crews.
"Alcohol appears to be a factor in the collision," CHP officer Greg Tassone. Tassone declined to release any further details, saying the investigation is still active. He did not say who authorities think was drinking.
The U.S. Forest Service said Kelly was a full-time employee and squad boss for the Tahoe Hotshots Crew, which is based in Camptonville.
Gruenberg is a member of the same crew.

THE YOUNG EXECUTIVE REPORT & WHAT IT MEANS TO ALL OF US!/a/k/a Plan To Liquidate The american Farmer

Have you ever heard of "THE YOUNG EXECUTIVE REPORT"? Well you should, because it effects all of us! In the CONGRESSIONAL RECORD of JUNE 1972 an item read in called The "Young Executive Report" what is it? What does it mean?

Also known as the "PLAN TO LIQUIDATE AMERICAN SMALL FAMILY FARMERS"
because they didn't have a valuable place in "SOCIETY", for a long time after I first heard of it
I was told it wasn't real...More real than Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, or the Tooth Fairy, and
ask any child they can tell you Santa is real until someone tells them otherwise. Its real, It has
caused far too much pain, to not be, just like the Native American"Indians"were assimilated into
civilized society, since the 1970's so has the American Farmer, all one has to do is research.
Basic simple curiosity, and the ability to follow a lead. To assimilate the farmer into society
the congress had to make way for this to happen, appropriations to add the American farmer
to the welfare line was set into motion. But how were they going to force, oh I mean assimilate
the farmer into suburbia, well It's called FSA/Farm Service Agency, formerly known as FmHA/
Farmers Home Administration, Just like PCA/Production Credit Association became Farm
Credit Services, these guys both had cousins in arms against the farmers, Federal Land Bank,
ASCS/ Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service. People there is an old adage here for
that there's somethings wrong here...follow the money, also check out CCC/ Commercial Commodity Credit, (an account inside the USDA w/ no accountability, whats that mean it where they hide the farmers stolen money, until they force them off their land, to divide their bonuses w/their friends in the Federal Courts, and the US Attorney's Office's, it doesn't matter how many people get hurt ask my grandson "TY" he was only three and a half years old on February 15, 2007when they came in w/ guns, lead by the Scott County Sheriff, They had no Court Order,
they had no warrants, but they manhandled a small child and his grandma, he is still fearful of
anyone wearing any type of uniform.
I have met personally other farmers who have been fighting for years, but since this has been on
since the 1970's wide spread, these people use the Divide and Conquer method to control the news of the widespread abuses, to keep from paying the harmed ones for the harms, trying
to wait them out to die.

Why do they want our lands so badly...they killed the Indians for Gold rushes, they are killing the farmer(s) no matter their color, race, sex, social disadvantage, handicap, etc. Not because of
Gold, but because of the OIL, Natural Gas, Coal, Minerals, maybe even gold or Silver, and the
Ponsi gold rush of get'em off the land rush into land contracts w/ big down payments and large
payments, so they can force them also into foreclosure and do it all again.

Not to mention that most if not all of these farmers were sought out by the USDA to become
borrowers, there, they have evidence(s) against these agencies, administrations, and Services
made their payments, and these folks payments don't show up as being made, then when
they/we got the Office of Civil Rights or the Secretary of Agriculture , their first priority is to
hold back so that the time limit has lapsed, And what about the fact that land cant be mortgaged
were you aware of this, check out your congressional records or ask, itconstituitonal@aol.com

All these things and more are in the records, just check out OPED NEWS archives, also the
MILKWEED magazine, the ROUNDABOUT NEWS. the DERRY BROWNFIELD SHOW,
TALkSHOE COMMUNITY CALL ON AIB RADIO/ROD CLASS ,WE THE PEOPLE
CLASS ACTION SUIT.

Where will the next one look for help...will he go to FARM AID, Who I have supported and
received help from, but when you ask them for help now they still have a list in Indiana of
contacts that in the 1990's were taken over by the Rural Development /RD another of the
alphabet boys of the USDA, oops, someone should tell them that Farm Counseling Project
is an Agency and isn't eligible to receive funds from non-profs, how can i prove this, look on the
brochure, it says that it is project of the RURAL DEVELOPMENT right on it!
Also check out the UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEYS, THEY KNEW!!!!SCOTT
COUNTY,INDIANA HAS COAL AND OIL AND OTHER STUFF 500 FT UNDER THE SERVICE
SINCE 1907! WHAT'S UNDER YOUR HOME! BLACK GOLD.

EVERYTHING I HAVE SAID HERE TONIGHT CAN BE RESEARCHED AND I CHALLENGE
ANY HONEST COP, FBI, US MARSHAL, TO HAVE A LOOK SEE, NAMES AND ADDRESS'S
AND COPIES OF DOCUMENTS WILL BE PUBLISHED HERE IN UPCOMING POST(S).
