Dear melissa,
A war on your right to know what's in your food is coming straight to your kitchen table -- courtesy of Monsanto and the Koch brothers.
New legislation introduced by Representative Mike Pompeo -- whose number one political contributor is the Koch brothers -- aims to prevent labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). More than two dozen states have GMO labeling bills pending this year, but this legislation would preempt states from passing any of these bills.
We have to speak out now to stop it. That's why I started my own campaign on CREDOMobilize.com, which allows activists to start their own petitions. My petition to Congress says:
Consumers have a fundamental right to know what they're eating. We urge you to reject legislation that would prohibit states and the federal government from requiring genetically modified foods to be labeled.
Sign the petition: Stop Congress from making it illegal for states to require GMO labeling.
The bill is so dangerous that we've dubbed it the DARK Act -- "Deny Americans the Right to Know" -- because that's exactly what Monsanto and the Koch brothers are trying to do by keeping your food ingredients secret.
As a chef and a father of three boys, it's important for me to know what's in the food I'm feeding my kids and customers. As an advocate for better food policies and board member of Food Policy Action, it's absolutely critical that we stand up to elected officials who introduce bad legislation or vote the wrong way on good food policy.
The simple truth is consumers have the right to know what they're feeding their families. More than 90% of Americans support GMO labeling, but the United States is one of the only industrialized countries in the world without labeling laws. It's time for Congress to move us forward, not backward, when it comes to our right to know what's in our food.
