Deadline Monday: Stop the Leucadia coal gasification boondoggle.

Dear Melissa,

New York based Leucadia Corporation wants to take billions in taxpayer dollars to build a dirty new coal gasification plant in Rockport that would be a major source of air pollution in Indiana and water pollution in the Ohio River.

The Rockport plant would use an experimental and expensive technology called coal gasification, an energy-intensive process with greenhouse gas emissions more than twice as high as traditional, dirty coal plants.

Leucadia doesn't want to take on any of the financial risk for this risky, dirty project, but they are happy to leave taxpayers on the hook for a multi-billion dollar Department of Energy (DOE) loan guarantee.

Until Monday, DOE is taking public comments to hear what Indiana residents think of Leucadia's coal gasification boondoggle. We need to urge them to reject it.

Deadline Monday: Tell the Department of Energy not to spend taxpayer money on a dirty coal boondoggle. Click here to submit a public comment now.

With clean energy sources like wind and solar growing rapidly, it doesn't make any sense to invest in a dirty, unproven and inefficient process like coal gasification. And with Indiana already experiencing extreme weather fueled by climate change, we can't afford to lock in decades of more carbon pollution that will only make climate change more extreme.

If Leucadia succeeds in securing the Department of Energy loan guarantee, Indiana residents will get the power plant's dangerous pollution and all of the financial risk, while Leucadia's investors and executives will reap the massive profits.

But if the Department of Energy takes the best interests of Indiana residents into account and decides not to provide a loan guarantee, it will likely kill the project, since Leucadia doesn't want to take on the risk itself.

We only have a few more days to make sure the DOE knows that Indiana residents don't want the Leucadia boondoggle. I hope you'll join us by sending a strong message to the Department of Energy today.
