Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced the retirement of Assistant Secretary Pearlie S. Reed. His retirement went into effect on June 1, 2012.
"Despite my encouragement to remain in his position, Pearlie informed me that for personal reasons he has chosen to retire from USDA," Vilsack said. "He brought the wisdom of nearly four decades of distinguished public service to USDA and to the Obama Administration, and I deeply appreciate his service.
"We hope to name an Acting Assistant Secretary for Administration in the near future. In the interim I have full confidence in the talented Departmental Administration leadership team that Pearlie has helped to develop, which will continue important efforts such as Cultural Transformation and USDA's Blueprint for Stronger Service."
In response, Reed stated "It has been a high honor and great privilege to serve over the past three years as the USDA Assistant Secretary of Agriculture for Administration, under President Obama and Secretary Vilsack. In retirement, I will continue to focus on conservation and public policy issues impacting socially disadvantaged farmers and communities."
