Take Action!

Spread the word. Keep up the pressure on Steny Hoyer: Tell him no backroom deals to cut Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security benefits.

CREDO Action | more than a network, a movement.

Steny Hoyer gets your message: Don't sell out our social safety net.

Dear Melissa,

On Thursday, I delivered a petition with your signature and over 148,000 others to Representative Steny Hoyer's office. The petition urged him not to cut any backroom deals that include cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits.

While we were delivering the petition, the phones were literally ringing off the hook with calls from CREDO Action members. The staffer who accepted the box of your signatures said that the office had received over 1,000 calls — and that she would make sure Rep. Hoyer received the petition.

Rep. Hoyer is clearly feeling the heat from your calls and petition signatures and the press coverage they have sparked. In fact, in an article last week, Rep. Hoyer even denied that he had ever suggested raising the retirement age saying:

"[Some claim] I've said we ought to raise the age. I haven't said that. What I've said is I think everything ought to be on the table."1

When Rep. Hoyer says "some claim" he means CREDO Action members. You be the judge. In 2010 Rep. Hoyer said "We should consider a higher retirement age or one pegged to lifespan"2. At CREDO we have drawn a line in the sand — no cuts to benefits. We must act now to prevent Steny Hoyer or any other Democrat for that matter from laying the groundwork for a preemptive cave on cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid benefits.3

Without the activism of over 148,000 CREDO Action members like you, it wouldn't have been possible for us to put Hoyer on the defensive and alert progressives and the media to the potential of yet another preemptive cave from conservative Democrats. The defensive responses from Hoyer and his office show how together we are making a difference in shaping the national discussion about whether or not to further cut our already fraying social safety net.

Your activism will be pivotal as we continue to wage this fight to stop a bad deal well before it comes to the floor of the House for a vote. Here are three things you can do to keep up the pressure:

  1. If you have not done so, call Representative Hoyer's office today and tell him NO backroom deal on cuts to our social safety net.
  2. Share the petition on Facebook and urge everyone to tell Rep. Hoyer not to sell out Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits.
  3. Share the petition on Twitter, and urge Hoyer not to make any back room deal to cut our social safety net.
Thank you for speaking out to hold House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer accountable.
