Noam Chomsky Endorses OccupyEPA the Launching of the

March 30^th American Spring Rally

Hailed as "the "father of modern linguistics," Noam Chomsky, MIT professor, this week applauded the American Spring and the demonstration taking place at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on March 30, 2012.  "It is a privilege to be able to endorse the launching of the 2012 U.S. occupation movement called the American Spring," said Chomsky.  "... (It) provides us all with an opportunity to become involved at the grassroots level and to challenge the right of the 1% to destroy the earth, foreclose on our homes, and undermine the well-being of the poor and oppressed today and future generations.  They are counting on our silence and apathy.  We should not grant them that lethal gift."

 

Occupation, civil rights, environmental, anti-war, Trayvon protesters, and community groups from around the country will gather in Washington, DC, on Friday, March 30^th.   There will be a march from Franklin Square Park (13^th and I Streets NW) at 12:00 noon that will continue down 12^th Street, crossing Pennsylvania Avenue, a few blocks from the White House, with a rally on the front lawn of the EPA headquarters at 1:00 p.m.    

 

Chomsky, a long-time activist, cited the EPA as "the birthplace of the No Fear Act, the first civil rights and whistleblower law of the 21^st century."  Organizers of the rally, Dr. Marsha Coleman-Adebayo, author of "No Fear:  A Whistleblower's Triumph over Corruption and Retaliation at the EPA," and Susan M. Morris, civil rights leader and whistleblower with a recent finding by the Office of Special Counsel against EPA management, are being joined in their fight to end civil rights violations and whistleblower retaliation under the leadership of Obama political appointee, Lisa Jackson.      

 

Five major demands were issued by the OccupyEPA and NOW DC movement organizers Dr. Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese, to:  Stop the War on Whistleblowers; Stop Polluting Low-Income Communities; Protect Civil Rights of Federal Employees; Protect People, the Planet, Not Corporate Profits; and Justice for Trayvon Martin. 

 

"Over the past months, it has been impressive and heartening to see how people from all walks of life have joined the Occupy movement to engage in the struggle to free the country from corporate domination, government repression and subordination to private power," Chomsky said.  "We are the 99%.  We have a chance to take our power back and to rescue the country, and the planet, from a grim fate." 

 

"The presence of hundreds of people at the EPA on March 30th will send a clear message that the 99% are watching and are demanding that the EPA do it's job to protect people and the planet instead of corporate profits. Participants will carry signs telling the EPA why a sustainable future is important to them - for  the lives of their children and future generations, for the beauty and diversity of plant and animal life, for clean air and water. The struggle of the 99% is a struggle for justice and for the very existence of human life on the planet. The EPA represents some of the worst policies put forth by the 1% - those that exploit people and the planet for greed and profit. We will not allow this practice to continue."
