Thank You for Standing Up

Turn off your televisions. Ignore the Newt-Mitt-Rick-Barack reality show. It is as relevant to your life as the gossip on "Jersey Shore." The real debate, the debate raised by the Occupy movement about inequality, corporate malfeasance, the destruction of the ecosystem, and the security and surveillance state, is the only debate that matters.

#january 25 One Year Later: Social Media & Politics 3.0
A year ago, a revolution began in Egypt that still reverberates there -- as well as among other repressive regimes in Syria, Bahrain, Yemen, Saudi Arabia and beyond, including thousands of miles away in New York City, where "Occupy Wall Street" protests in turn took root and then flowered into literally hundreds of similar protests all around the world.

Why You Should Care About What is Going on in Tucson
Look. America cannot make the best of the 21st century and reach whatever potential might be there to reach by 2100 unless as a country, we learn to face reality. We have issues. The business of getting it together and trying to progress is the business of seeing clearly...

FLAME-- A PR Org for Israel-- Advocates Murdering Scientists

FLAME, (Facts and Logic About the Middle East,) a rabidly right wing, organization which generates Pro-Israel, anti-palestinian, anti-Iran, anti American Left propaganda, has stooped to a new low. It has sent out an email titled, " Killing Iranian Nuclear Scientists May Be the Best Hope for Stopping the Mullahs."

Tennessee Tea Party 'Demands' That References To Slavery Be Removed From History Textbooks

In 2010, the conservatives who controlled the Texas Board of Education caused an uproar when they made radical changes to the history curriculum for the state's 4.8 million public school students. The changes included referring to the country's first black president as "Barack Hussein Obama," and requiring students to "contrast" Confederate President Jefferson Davis' inaugural address with Abraham Lincoln's philosophical views.

Will Predatory Hedge Funds Succeed in Milking Greece for All It's Worth?
Hedge fund sharks are using financial terrorism to extract billions from the Greek people. And they can get away with it for one reason: the EU and America are enormously fearful that a Greek default would lead to a chain reaction of financial defaults that wd bring down the entire global financial system. Hopefully, Occupy Wall Street will one day grow into a movement large enough to end this kind of financial terrorism.

Court to Vermont: "Drop Dead"
In practical terms, this could mean that any corporation can bust any public trust on even the flimsiest pretext.Let the corporate lawyers find some pale excuse and the company can skirt its contractual obligations. In the hands of the supremely corporatist Roberts Court, this case could join Citizens United in a devastating one-two punch for the unrestrained power of the private corporation. It would also put the reactor beyond

Bloodless Coup at Freedom Plaza: Embedded with Occupy DC/ Part Four.

When approaching the Freedom Plaza Occupy camp from the north the differences between this protest and McPherson park are obvious. This Occupation does not resemble the typical Occupy camps previously evicted across America. Rather than and embryonic composite of tents, tarps, string, rope, and protest signs this camp looks more like a military operation.

Oklahoma Republican Senator Wants Ban on Human Fetuses in Food
No. This is NOT a joke. A Republican state senator from Oklahoma City has introduced a bill that would ban the use of aborted human fetuses in food, though there's no indication that this is a concern.

Christianity Is Not a Jewelry Store
This article is about Christianity and Christians real vs. so-called Christians. It speaks of Christianity as not being a jewelry store where people get to pick and chose whom they should love. It speaks of the rock b/w Christianity and God's love. It points out how Gays and the LGBT people aren't the real dilemma of the Christian Church but plainly how being evil and hateful are the real issues.

Drowning In Hypocrisy

There is no question that Bush/Cheney/Obama have trashed the US Constitution, US statutory law, and international law. But Washington, having overthrown justice, has established that might is right. No foreign government is going to send its forces into the US to drag the war criminals out and place them on trial.

Are the Koch brothers teaching you?
What's happening to academia in Florida demands national attention. Billionaires Charles and David Koch are infringing on intellectual freedom and independence in colleges and universities. It's an old fashioned quid pro quo where the Koch brothers get allied professors who'll preach Ayn Rand, supply side economic policies and the values of the 19th century Guilded Age to students and the college gets some funding.

A Way Around The Federal Nuclear Power Fix
The nuclear power program in the U.S> was set up rigged--to allow the federal government to push atomic energy with state and local governments "pre-empted" on most issues. But there's a way around this federal nuclear fix--the use by states of their power of "eminent domain."

Keystone XL Jobs Bewilder Media

God help the poor news consumers of America, especially the would-be voters. President Obama's decision to reject the Keystone XL pipeline last week incited a new wave of coverage and speculation about how many jobs the line would create. Unfortunately, many outlets are still citing inflated and unreliable industry figures in the tens to hundreds of thousands while ignoring more modest and trustworthy approximations from academia and government, which place the total anywhere from 2,500 to 6,000.

What Planet Do These GOP Clowns Live On?
Watching the Republican candidates describe the various methods by which they would destroy the U.S. government is certainly an illuminating exercise, regardless of which clown leads the pack. It is one thing for the Koch Brothers, Sam Walton, or others of their ilk to suggest that the government and public would be better off if corporations were not taxed at all; such a comment is obviously self-serving nonsense. Indeed, if they had their way, they would do away with any limits whatsoever on their power, wealth or authority. Yet, for electoral candidates, who are confronted with the economic crises facing this nation and the world, who are witnessing the worst depression in 65 years, and who are faced with unparalleled unemployment and financial stagnation -- for those candidates to parrot the wish-list of corporate billionaires as if their recommendations are anything but...

US Number One in Global Weapons Sales
Today we take great pride (or at least have no shame) in being by far the world's number one arms-exporting nation. A few statistics bear this out. From 2006 to 2010, the US accounted for nearly one-third of the world's arms exports, easily surpassing a resurgent Russia in the "Lords of War" race. Despite a decline in global arms sales in 2010 due to recessionary pressures, the US increased its market share, accounting for a whopping 53 percent of the trade that year. Last year saw the US on pace to deliver more than $46 billion in foreign arms sales. Who says America isn't number one anymore?

Google tracks consumers across products, users can't opt out

Google said Tuesday it will require users to allow the company to follow their activities across e-mail, search, YouTube and other services, a radical shift in strategy that is expected to invite greater scrutiny of its privacy and competitive practices. The information will enable Google to develop a fuller picture of how people use its growing empire of Web sites. Consumers will have no choice but to accept the changes.

Salala tragedy: Pakistan Army rejects US probe on NATO air raid

Judge: Fifth Amendment doesn't protect encrypted hard drives

A federal judge has ruled that a Colorado woman can be compelled to decrypt her encrypted laptop so that the police can inspect it for incriminating evidence. The woman, Ramona Fricosu, is a defendant in a mortgage scam case. She had argued that the Fifth Amednment's privilege against self-incrimination protected her from having to disclose the password to her hard drive, which was encrypted using PGP Desktop.

Anti-Muslim Movie Shown On "Continuous Loop' To NYPD
An anti-Muslim movie was screened to New York Police Department personnel "on a continuous loop" for between three months and one year of training, according to NYPD documents obtained by the Brennan Center for Justice. An NYPD spokesman said last year that the Clarion Fund's "The Third Jihad," a film which features an Islamic flag flying over the White House, was screened "a couple of times when officers were filling out paperwork before the actual coursework began" and characterized it as a "wacky film."

FBI: Conn. cops behaved like 'bullies with badges'
The three officers and one sergeant on the East Haven Police Department accused of assaulting Latino suspects and residents while on patrol "behaved like bullies with badges," an FBI investigator told NBC News on Tuesday. FBI agents arrested the four men, including the president of the local police union, on charges they terrorized individuals and drummed up false reports to cover up abuses in a Connecticut suburb where a federal probe uncovered episodes of misery inflicted on the Latino community. "The four police officers charged today allegedly formed a cancerous cadre that routinely deprived East Haven residents of their civil rights..."
