Obama Admin Seeks Permission To Lie In Response To Freedom Of Information Requests - Even To The Courts

The Administration that promised to be the most transparent in history continues to be obsessed with secrecy. Now they even seek the right to lie about the existence od government records in response to Freedom of Information requests -- even to the Judiciary.

There's also this poll I created, after some discussions with a number of editors and writers and people at different OWS "Occupied Territories."

now, getting a bit personal...
Whew... a hectic two days.

I did almost all of my work today at a local starbucks at Barnes and Noble, because my cable internet provider-- Comcast-- went down.

up against the only wall with a power outlet, with Barnes and Noble in the background

I wrote a few articles, did a poll, sent out a major mailing to our almost 1500 article writers who'd written for OEN in the past year. I spoke to a few new volunteers, sent out an announcement to all editors, sent many emails to our webmaster regarding tweaks and fixes, published about 20 items from the queue... walked one of our writers through some trouble he was having posting an article, then found an image for it.

Oh, the site was not loading for a bit so I had to correspond with our server support team.

I shared some links about Clarence Thomas with our writer who is working on getting him impeached, answered tech questions from a handful of people, set up an interview for next week with Glenn Greenwald, engaged in some email and phone conversations with several members of the senior editorial team-- we're in touch just about every day and they are AMAZING and wonderful.

I'm really excited about the new volunteers. This past few months we've been inventing a new control panel that helps the senior editors and I to interact with new volunteers. Used to be I'd lose contact and bio information. Now it's neatly stored, accessible, with info on interests, and that's tied to a new mentoring system we're developing-- all of that with cool links and control buttons to make it easier to promote members to admins. So, if you want to volunteer, please do use this link to do it. We're looking for some basic help but particularly interested in helping writers become leaders covering niches or "beats" on topics or issues they care about. We help empower you to build a community, like we've done for election integrity, whistleblowing, marine ecology, the BP disaster, activism-- to name a few. (If you've already volunteered, hang in there. We're reaching out to the people who have been at Opednews longer or who have used the system the most, posting comments, quick links, articles and diaries.)

We're Really, Really behind this month. Maybe it's because I've been away a lot, working my ass off. Maybe it's because I haven't sent out as many newsletters because I've been on the road or focusing on other important stuff. But we can't do this without YOU helping with donations. Some months, someone comes along with a $200 or $500 or $1000 donation. We did have one $200 donation and a few $100 ones. We need to raise about $4800 a month to pay our most basic expenses. so please, if you can, give whatever you can.

It amazes me how some of our most famous writers make donations. I'll respect their privacy, but could use your help, wherever you are-- in the US, Canada, China, Australia... 30% of our readers are outside the US, so...

thanks,

rob kall

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that Canadian oil producers view the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline as an opportunity to charge more for their oil. According to TransCanada, Canadian oil shippers could use the pipeline to add up to $4 billion to US fuel costs.

Occupy Chicago: 130 Arrested In City Park Protest

Anti-Wall Street demonstrators of the Occupy Chicago movement stood their ground in a downtown park in noisy but peaceful defiance of police orders to clear out, prompting 130 arrests early Sunday. "Take me next! Take me next!" some shouted as police began the arrests. Others chanted as they were led away: "We'll be back!"

Muammar Qaddafi: The One-State Solution
THE shocking level of the last wave of Israeli-Palestinian violence, which ended with this weekend's cease-fire, reminds us why a final resolution to the so-called Middle East crisis is so important. It is vital not just to break this cycle of destruction and injustice, but also to deny the religious extremists in the region who feed on the conflict an excuse to advance their own causes. But everywhere one looks, among the speeches and the desperate diplomacy, there is no real way forward. A just and lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians is possible, but it lies in the history of the people of this conflicted land, and not in the tired rhetoric of partition and two-state solutions.

American Hypocrisy At Its Finest

Seven minute video sums up the hypocrisy in our present day government.

La Vets Demand Housing At Giant Va Campus

Nearly 400 acres of land were set aside to house veterans and thousands of veterans who need a place to call home. Now, a generation after Vietnam, the facility's abandoned buildings are off limits to the veterans they were intended to serve.

Npr Dumping Opera Show Over Host's Dc Protest

NPR will no longer distribute the member station-produced program "World of Opera" to about 60 stations across the country because the show host helped organize an ongoing Washington protest. North Carolina-based classical music station WDAV, which produces the show, said it will distribute the nationally syndicated program on its own beginning Nov. 11. The station said it plans to keep Lisa Simeone as host and has said her involvement in a political protest does not affect her job as a music program host.

Friday Is New Doomsday, Christian Radio Network Says By Cbc
One of these Fridays, the world may end. Family Radio did not respond to an email request for an interview, and a phone number on the website was not in service Wednesday. Ascough says there is historical precedence for groups setting another end date fairly quickly, and points to the Millerites, whose leader William Miller was the founder of the Seventh Day Adventist movement, which is still around today. In the case of the Millerites, they went through two "Great Disappointments" when Jesus Christ did not return in 1844 and 1845. Ascough expects Family Radio will endure because, in such instances, people tend to be drawn to the group because of the charisma of the leader or his close associates. Because of that, followers are willing to cut the leader some slack and "are willing to allow that God might slowly unfold things to them," says Ascough.

Climate Change Deniers Abandon "befuddled Warmist' Physicist Who Came Around On Global Warming

Climate change deniers thought they had an ally in Richard Muller, a popular physics professor at UC Berkeley. Muller didn't reject climate science per se, but he was a skeptic, and a convenient one for big polluters and conservative anti-environmentalists -- until Muller put their money where his mouth was, and launched the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project, in part with a grant from the Charles G. Koch foundation. After extensive study, he's concluded that the existing science was right all along -- that the earth's surface is warming, at an accelerating rate. But instead of second-guessing themselves, his erstwhile allies of convenience are now abandoning him...

Not With A Bang, But A Whimper: Bank Of America's Death Rattle By William K. Black

Bob Ivry, Hugh Son and Christine Harper have written an article that needs to be read by everyone interested in the financial crisis. The article (available here) is entitled: BofA Said to Split Regulators Over Moving Merrill Derivatives to Bank Unit. The thrust of their story is that Bank of America's holding company, BAC, has directed the transfer of a large number of troubled financial derivatives from its Merrill Lynch subsidiary to the federally insured bank Bank of America (BofA). The story reports that the Federal Reserve supported the transfer and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) opposed it.
