Local NAACP Branches Dismiss Apology Issued By Congressman Doug Lamborn (R-CO) For Calling President Barack Obama "Tar Baby"

DC NAACP Calls for Lamborn's Removal from Office

The DC NAACP Branch and Montclair Branch collectively condemn Congressman Doug Lamborn (R-CO) for calling President Obama a "tar baby" in an interview on a Denver radio station about the heated debt ceiling debate. The highly conservative representative issued a statement of apology last week, but local NAACP Branches on the east coast are not as willing to excuse racially charged words from a member of Congress.

Akosua Tyus, President of DC NAACP Branch said:

"Representative Doug Lamborn (R-CO) should be removed from office based on the racist comment used to describe his working relationship with President Barack Obama during our nation's time of
financial crisis. Never in our nation's history has an elected official shown such blatant disrespect for the Commander-in-Chief. Regardless of the message he intended to relay, Rep. Lamborn should understand that he is held to a higher standard in society as an elected official. His poor judgment and lack of professionalism is a national reflection of our country.

The NAACP DC Branch will not accept an apology that continues to establish a toxic precedent of racism in our country. This level of racism is an infectious disease that trickles from the top and flows down
throughout our communities as an acceptable practice. Rep. Lamborn's racially charged words toward President Obama were unacceptable and typify the behavior that continues to undermine the constitution to all American citizens."

Thomas L. Reynolds, President of Montclair NAACP in New Jersey said:

"The Montclair NAACP is abhorrently opposed to Congressman Doug Lamborn's blatant racism. Rep. Lamborn's comment was the type one would have expected during the time of slavery, when it
was widely accepted that African-Americans were property and were marginalized based on the color of their skin. It is unfortunate that in 2011, anyone who understands the tremendous contributions by
African-Americans in government and politics should make such a racist statement. It is unsettling and outrageous that anyone would make such a racist public statement about the President of the United
States. Furthermore, all people should be appalled and disgusted. Congressman Lamborn should do more than apologize: he should be removed from office, give up his paycheck, and be remembered as
the modern day Bull Turner. There is no place for a public official, who dictates the policy of this country, to be racist."

Congressman Lamborn's Statements
"I don't even want to have to be associated with him. It's like touching a tar baby, and you get it — you know, you're stuck, and you're part of the problem now, and you can't get away," Lamborn said. "I don't want that to happen to us (Republicans), but if it does, or not, he'll still get — properly so — the blame, because his policies, for four years, will have failed the American people."

Lamborn Issues President an Apology

"Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05) today sent a personal letter to President Barack Obama apologizing for using a term  some find insensitive. Lamborn was attempting to tell a radio audience last week that the President's policies have created an economic quagmire for the nation and are responsible for the dismal economic conditions our country faces. He regrets that he chose the phrase "tar baby," rather than the word "quagmire." The Congressman is confident that the President will accept his heartfelt apology."
