I can't understand why they would do this to the environment and in doing so endanger themselves?

First of all they never put anything out there without themselves and their minions having an antidote to it. Remember Bush taking Cipro 30 days before the anthrax attack??? That is how long you have to take it to be effective when the bug strikes.
Second of all, you have to understand that humans with a spirit or soul are the ones that connect to nature since each living thing has the same thing only less, but a soul non the less. These cretins do not have a soul, they feel nothing as satanists and in fact, they hate life of any kind. They would kill the planet if they could.
In the blog here, search for Satanism or the age of satan. or both and read about them. Think about it, if they can do what they do to other humans without understanding the impact to themselves, how can they understand at that level what the impact would be on lesser creatures and what impact it would hve on them. They don't care. Seriously.
If they have their booze, their drugs and their whores, they are happy little campers. They are addicts who reject life.
